Legal Counsel (1-3 Years’ Experience – Corporate/Commercial)
Formed in 1997, Re:Sound is a Canadian not-for-profit music licensing company dedicated to obtaining fair compensation for artists and record companies for their performance rights. On behalf of its members, representing thousands of artists and record companies, Re:Sound licenses recorded music for public performance, broadcast and new media.
As the policies and emphasis of the music industry change, greater importance has been placed upon the royalties paid to the performers and makers of sound recordings. Re:Sound, through its tariff work, is now playing a leading role in some of the cutting edge issues facing the music industry. Its Legal Department provides advice on a broad range of topics and it is now looking for a bright, motivated individual to fill the role of Legal Counsel. As Legal Counsel, this role will take on a wide variety of tasks, including handling matters relating to corporate governance, copyright, employment, music licensing, and privacy law matters. This role will also deal in government relations and litigation management including on matters related to the enforcement of tariffs; therefore, you will undertake legal/legislative research tasks and effectively communicate internally and with external counsel. This position will report to the Vice President, Corporate and Legal Affairs and General Counsel and be located in Yorkville (currently working virtually).
An ideal candidate for this role will be motivated and capable, with a strong interest in the music industry. You will have approximately 1-3 years of corporate/commercial experience gained at a law firm or corporation. Any experience in copyright, IP, or music licensing will be an asset. You will demonstrate excellent negotiation skills, as well as outstanding written and oral communication skills. You will possess strong drafting abilities, be self-motivated and a team player.
