You will also support other areas of the Company, as needed, and ideally be able to competently practice law in the English and French languages and provide legal advice and support related to Québec matters. Although Empire Life’s head office is located in Kingston, the position may be based out of Empire Life’s Kingston, Toronto, Montreal or Quebec City offices, with potential for working from home and/or in the office.

You will be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario and have 5-8 years of corporate or securities law experience gained as in house counsel or from private practice.  You will have experience with the financial services industry and, ideally, familiarity with legal and regulatory issues pertaining to the insurance industry generally, and segregated funds and related products (e.g. securities) in particular.  While support from the legal team will be provided, confidence and the ability to work independently will be required.  Strong communication skills, good judgment, adaptability, as well as a pragmatic approach to finding solutions will be important. Bilingualism (English/French) and being a member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec is strongly preferred. Knowledge of Group Retirement Savings plans and technology law are assets, though not required.
