Founded in 1923, The Empire Life Insurance Company (“Empire Life”) is among the leading life insurance companies in Canada. Empire Life offers a full range of  insurance products and services to Canadians including individual and group life and health insurance, and investment and retirement products. Proudly Canadian, this organization’s mission is to make it simple, fast and easy for Canadians to get the investment, insurance and group benefits coverage they need to build wealth, generate income, and achieve financial security.

Empire Life’s legal team continues to grow and is now seeking to add a Legal Counsel to primarily support its investment insurance line of business.  Reporting to a Senior Legal Counsel, you will provide legal advice and support on a broad range of legal and regulatory issues mainly related to investment insurance products, segregated funds and other legal matters, including drafting, reviewing and negotiating a broad range of commercial contracts. You will also support other areas of the Company, as needed, and ideally be able to competently practice law in the English and French languages and provide legal advice and support related to Québec matters. Although Empire Life’s head office is located in Kingston, the position may be based out of Empire Life’s Kingston, Toronto, Montreal or Quebec City offices, with potential for working from home and/or in the office.

You will be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario and have 5-8 years of corporate or securities law experience gained as in house counsel or from private practice.  You will have experience with the financial services industry and, ideally, familiarity with legal and regulatory issues pertaining to the insurance industry generally, and segregated funds and related products (e.g. securities) in particular.  While support from the legal team will be provided, confidence and the ability to work independently will be required.  Strong communication skills, good judgment, adaptability, as well as a pragmatic approach to finding solutions will be important. Bilingualism (English/French) and being a member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec is strongly preferred. Knowledge of Group Retirement Savings plans and technology law are assets, though not required.

This is an exceptional opportunity to take on an integral role within a well-respected organization.  The work is interesting, varied and national in nature and this position offers an excellent opportunity to grow and take on new challenges with a dynamic organization.  If you are interested in applying to this position, please forward your cv and cover letter to Lesa Ong or Garrett Giannidis of NagataConnex Executive Legal Search at info@nagataconnex.com.
