Beginning in 2003, it has been our mission to change the way people use energy which has fueled a remarkable impact: 133 million metric tons of CO2 averted since 2003. Now as the largest provider of emission-reducing energy solutions across North America, we continue to give our clients and partners everything they need to make using less energy easy and accessible for everyone. In Canada, our clients include large utilities, Federal and Provincial governments and Crown corporations.
The Canadian office of our organization has been enjoying double digit growth over the past 3 years and is now seeking to hire its first Legal Counsel in the Toronto office to support this growth. Working closely with local leadership and the business groups, there will be a broad range of work including commercial litigation, employment (Federal and Provincial), commercial contracts, policies/procedures, RFPs and regulatory law. In addition, you will have the confidence and interpersonal skills to support and educate internal clients at all levels as well as instruct external counsel. As the first lawyer in the downtown Toronto office, you will need to be independent, decisive and self-motivated. Through your interaction with Canadian Senior Leadership, you will contribute to discussions on strategy, risk and development opportunities. This position reports to the CLO in Portland, Oregon, with a dotted-line to the SVP, Operations, in Toronto and is hybrid, with 3 days in the office and occasional travel within North America.
We are seeking a generalist, with the ideal candidate possessing 5-8 years of commercial litigation, employment and commercial experience with at least some of their experience gained in private practice. Familiarity with Quebec law and French language skills will be valued. Since you will be reporting to a CLO in another office, the ability to take initiative and work independently will be mandatory. You will also need to be organized, flexible and decisive to succeed in this role. An ability to assess business risk and provide pragmatic advice will be important. Finally, leadership and strong collaborative skills will be required as there is potential to be in a managerial role as the team expands.
