Empire Life is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its growing legal team. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, you will provide both legal and risk management advice primarily related to M&A and lending transactions, and also regarding IT and commercial third-party contracts, distribution and general corporate and commercial matters, as required. Although Empire Life’s head office is located in Kingston, the position may be based out of Empire Life’s Toronto, Kingston, Montreal or Quebec City offices, with the option for working from home for part of the time.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years of legal experience, most of which related to M&A work, gained from a leading law firm or corporation, ideally within the financial services industry. Strong preference will be given to familiarity with legal and regulatory issues pertaining to the operations of a federally regulated life and health insurance company operating in Canada, knowledge of insurance distribution, and technology and/or IT procurement matters. Bilingual (English and French) language skills will also be valued. While support from members of the legal team will be provided, confidence and the ability to work independently will be required. Strong communication skills and good judgment as well as a pragmatic approach to finding solutions will be important as you will be working directly with the business and corporate development teams, as well as members of the executive leadership team and external legal counsel.
